What is KDSS School Council (SC)?
KDSS School Council is an opportunity for parents to be involved in their child's education and to learn more about what is happening at school.

What Happens at School Council?
The school council is chaired by a parent volunteer who coordinates with the School Principal and Home and School to determine the topics that are valuable to raise at our School Council meetings. At these meetings, the Principal shares with parents news about what is happening at school, the School Board and the Ministry of Education. Trustee, Staff and student representatives also share their information. Input from parents may be sought for some current initiatives and support. The School Council chair raises issues of concern to parents, to be discussed. SCC is mandatory in the Ontario.

What Kinds of Topics are Discussed at School Council?
Here is a sampling of topics that have been discussed:

  • Cafeteria arrangements
  • New Ministry or Board policy
  • Upcoming student activities including sports, dances and fundraisers
  • Student and staff enrichment opportunities
  • Plans to prepare students for the Literacy Test
  • Status and path forward on EQAO Test
  • 40 hours of community service
  • A parent information session about social media etc.
  • Robotics and Sport teams
  • Quality of an ideal Administrator
  • Timetabling and staffing process
  • Inclusiveness and Diversity: Kincardine Multicultural Celebration
  • How can we create awareness about the safety and health of students
  • Pro-Grant application
  • How to engage parents and community at large

How Can you Participate?
Simply listen for phone messages regarding School Council meetings or check the main KDSS website or the signboard, to find out when meetings are held. Then just show up. Meetings are typically for an hour long, held in the evenings, approximately once a month.

What if I Cannot Attend a Meeting?
If you have important input to provide you may contact the Principal or SC/H&S Chair about your issue. The idea is for you to show up to meetings in person, in order to avoid an overload of e-mail and to communicate more efficiently.

Is School Council My Only Avenue for Communication?
No. Specific concerns about your child are often best addressed by communicating with a specific teacher. General concerns about school are often best raised by contacting the Principal directly. The kinds of topics best addressed at School Council are ones that may benefit the parent community as a whole.

Both SCC and Home and School are interested to know your opinion and request you to communicate and encourage engagement and would like to know that "How would you like to contribute to make a difference in our student's success?
