Cooperative Education is a unique opportunity to gain "real world experience" in the world of work, while obtaining credits towards a high school diploma.
Students can gain two or four credits per semester by completing the in-class component and 220 or 440 hours in the workplace, respectively.
Please note that students in trades-based courses can no longer earn five credits in one semester.
The objective of Co-operative Education is threefold:
- To prepare the student for successful participation in a work placement.
- To provide sufficient time and various opportunities at the placement to enable the student to apply and further develop the knowledge and skills acquired in the related course.
- To provide opportunities for the student to integrate and reflect on the learning acquired in school and at the placement.
Course Components Academically :
- Pre-course application, counselling, and interviewing :
- Application package (due the last day of March)
- Interview between co-op teacher and student
- Interview with potential employer
- Pre-placement Component :
- Review and application of knowledge and skills related to:
- safety, including rights and responsibilities,
- resume writing, cover letter, thank you letters, job applications
- and preparing answers to interview questions
- Demonstrate understanding of:
- self-assessment skills
- job-readiness skills
- school and placement expectations
- health and safety (rules, safety equipment, personal protective equipment, Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS, WSIB)
- work ethics and responsible use of information technology
- Employment Standards Act; Human Rights Act
- How to deal with and/or report workplace concerns, accidents, unsafe practices
- Relate placement experience to curriculum expectations
- Reflect on/analyze placement experiences
- Access related career information
- Understand the role and history of labour unions
- Understand labour market trends and the nature of the changing workplace
- Understand the changing role of men/women at work
- Understand issues relation to human rights, discrimination, harassment, disability
